Things I Learned Part XVIII

I just got back from seeing the Indigo Girls with Rebecca and Denise. I learned a few things tonight:

  • Listening to good music live brings out a lot of emotion within me.
  • The last time I saw the band was during college. I heard a lot of Indigo Girls during college, actually. While I lived in my Ray Street dorm, I would often fall asleep listening to music, often the Indigo Girls, and in love. Throughout college, without a real basis, I became less confident in my musical abilities, and even though for years people would keep telling me I would be a great teacher, more and more doubts entered my mind. It’s possible that by the time I was student-teaching I no longer felt passionate about what I set out to do four and a half years prior. That same semester was very bad relationship-wise as well. Several months went by where A. and I just didn’t talk even though we saw each other and worked with each other every other day. I don’t remember why now. But I think it must have been around this time that I lost whatever passions I had.
  • I need to get real music back into my life. I’m just not the same without it.
  • Lastly, I learned that I should not be allowed to write online after midnight.

And one final word: Have a great time in Europe, Becca, and good luck—I hope things work out for you.

  1. It’s amazing how hearing and seeing someone put their soul into their music onstage brings out that longing, isn’t it. I still get emotional when I see the Jr High Jazz band I used to play in perform songs I played 12 years ago. I usually go home and play everything I can remember, until my hands hurt, remembering trips, gigs, the fun.
Oh, to be in a band again.

  2. You DO. Music is good for us. My roommate in college had a key to the theater, because she was working on tech stuff. When she was upset, she used to go into the theater alone in the middle of the night and sing on mainstage. It never failed to maker her feel better. I think we all need something like that.

  3. I saw the Girls at Radio City the night before you did (Tuesday). It was such a great show. And it surprised me, how many of those songs took me right back to where I was when I was playing them all the time, five years ago or more. The emotions all just came pouring right back.

Isn’t the power of music amazing?

  4. Hiya! I stumbled on your page by accident a few months ago, but I never felt moved to comment before now. The Indigo Girls are great but i don’t get to see them often in Iowa, tho. This entry made me sad, Spike. It reminds me of some things I went through in the years after college, back when dinosaurs ruled the earth. 😉 Don’t know how long you’ve been out of school. I’ve randomly looked through your archives, seems like it’s been a few years, maybe… I wasn’t honest with myself or people I luved for a long time and it was really bad- nasty divorce due to my infidelity, et al. Don’t know who A is, but I hope you were up front with her (or him, for that matter) about losing your passions. Good luck with that roommate, and i agree with Susie- let the power of music heal and guide you.
