I had dinner with my father and his girlfriend tonight. He has now fully moved into her house, and they both seem quite happy. That’s good. We had homemade Chinese food and my father told me of his adventures in Bulgaria and Athens. After dinner and stories, A. brought out some delicious “Death By Chocolate” ice cream, which brings me to the point of the entry, nevermind the crazy co-worker of my father’s, who decided he didn’t want to come back to the U.S. after they were finished with their job in Bulgaria.
I can’t tolerate lactose. Hate the stuff. Why do humans drink milk of another animal? No other mammal drinks the milk of another species to the best of my knowledge. They drink the milk of their mother until they reach a certain point in their development, and then they stop. Why are people so difficult, and insist that milk is good for you? Our bodies are not designed to break down milk sugars efficiently after we reach a certain age. And yet we insist that milk-based foods are essential. Calcium? Calcium is easily obtained from other foods.
Disagree? Show me a wild monkey sucking on an udder.
The monkey-sucking mental picture alone makes me want to swear off cow’s milk for good. As it is, I only use it for cooking.
Yeah, but…with the exception of people who are lactose intolerant, show me where milk is BAD for you.
i feel like i keep finding more and more lactose intolerant people…. i just don’t like the taste of it…. although ice cream… that’s a different story 🙂
What foods are you eating that you’re easily obtaining calcium from? I’d like to know, because I know I don’t get enough. Most of us don’t, which is why we end up with osteoporosis and broken bones when we’re older.
Ok… milk may not be “bad” but most people ARE lactose intolerant (or BECOME lactose intolerant as they get older). Humans aren’t designed to digest cow’s milk. As for calcium, I know I don’t get enough, but if I ate healthier, I could get enough calcium without drinking milk. Carrots and other vegetables contain calcium in good amounts. More info here.
I’m really not trying to be a pain in the ass, but in order to get your minimum recommended amount of calcium without dairy products or supplements, you would have to eat 29 cups of vegetables. *Every day*. (If you ate canned pumpkin, you would only have to eat 17 cups a day. Of canned pumpkin. Every day.) I’m pretty sure you haven’t eaten 29 cups of vegetables in the 6 years years that I’ve known you.
Just sayin.
Also, a lot of vegetables that contain calcium don’t actually give you calcium because they also contain substances that block the body’s absorption of the calcium. AND, your body doesn’t process calcium without proper levels of vitamin D (also found in milk), so even if you’re eating 29 cups of the right kinds of vegetables, it’s not doing a bit of good if you don’t have adequate levels of vitamin D.
Again, just sayin. 🙂
Well… well fine. 🙂 Milk makes me feel gross, which is more than enough reason for me to stay away from it.
Right. Remind me NEVER to ask you to go for ice cream ever ever ever again.
Well, that’s why God invented Lactaid pills.
And why is it some can handle cheese, but not the milk and ice cream? The process cannot be that different.
All in all, just avoid monkeys sucking on anything… in case you’re next.
No, no, no, Spike. I think you’re being a hypocrite. You can’t be against milk in some forms but not in others. No double standards here. No more ice cream for you. Ever.
🙂
mmmm….. ice cream…..
A lot of people who are lactose intolerant can eat yogurt, because there’s something about the active cultures that produces something that counteracts the lactose intolerance. So that’s still a good way to get calcium. And even if you don’t like yogurt, you can find other dairy products that are made with yogurt that don’t taste like yogurt. I found this new cheese at Fresh Fields called Amish Yogurt Cheese, which doesn’t taste anything like yogurt, and my extremely lactose-intolerant friend S. ate it and didn’t get sick.
Darren- no comments about pretzels, please. 🙂
