Barenaked in Holmdel, New Jersey

There are very few things more fun for me than seeing live music. Last night, I caught Barenaked Ladies at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. I have wanted to see this band for years, and I finally got around to it, thank to Randi. Our seats were pretty far away on the lawn in the back but we still had a pretty good view of the stage over everybody’s heads, and there were large video screens to give us close-ups and silly videos. They played a good mix of their older and newer songs, and had a lot of fun bantering on stage. Apparently Bon Jovi was playing the same night at Giants Stadium. Steven from BNL told the audience that they were originally booked for Giants Stadium, but since Jon Bon Jovi is from New Jersey and BNL is from Canada, the Ladies were given the boot.

At the gate, security was checking people’s bags for Macaroni and Cheese. This may seem a little weird, but apparently during their song If I Had $1,000,000 audience members customarily throw the uncooked noodles on stage. There must have been quite a few people who got their Kraft boxes past the security because pasta was thrown. After the song the band members went on a long tirade about how real fans know that the band doesn’t like to be pelted by Macaroni and Cheese. Apparently, getting hit by that stuff stings. Other objects thrown on stage included women’s underwear and beach balls.

I would like to go to another BNL concert, but checking their tour schedule, it looks like they won’t be in the area for the rest of the tour.

  1. They are going to be doing a fall-run, so possibly they might be at the spectrum again 🙂 Sorry I missed you, i looked all over for you, but i guess i didnt look far enough on the lawn for you. i was in the 4th row..and steve got KD *in the eye* from a guy in the 2nd row — i got pelted too. did you see my sign on the monitor? 🙂

  2. We were on the left-center side of the lawn while facing the stage, up front near the seats. I probably saw your sign on the monitor. What did it say?Addendum to the entry: Vertical Horizon was suprisingly good, but they’re live show was unimpressive from my perspective. Sarah Harmer was nice, and it was good to see her again.
