So I’m doing a little reading, and it comes to my attention that the reggae mastermind behind It Wasn’t Me, Shaggy, is the same recording artist that created the song Oh Carolina. Oh Carolina was a sort of cult hit my junior year in high school on our trip to England. They played it in all the dance clubs, and all the annoying people on the bus sang what they thought were the lyrics for the rest of the trip… not that I have any pent-up anger or bitterness or anything.
BAWAWA!
…and we managed to slip our royalty-free seven seconds onto the England video.
For those still confused, you can find the real lyrics here.
What’s with the camel on your site? I never heard of this song. Was it popular or an unknown cult hit? In your webcam shot you kinda look like Eddy Monster, but in a good way.
Actually, the webcam shot looks like Kevin MacDonald from “Kids in the Hall” introducing the “Pit of Ultimate Evil” (Simon/Hecubus) sketches.
Believe it or not, “Oh Carolina” was a top ten hit in England at the time we were over there.
Everyone needs a camel. I just consider myself lucky to have one on my website.
Shaggy’s “Oh Carolina” was his first big hit (a remake of one of the first reggae songs ever recorded), though he had released some stuff on minor reggae labels before that. “Boombastic” was his biggest hit until his most recent cut. He’s actually pretty talented and has a good stage show, if you can look past his poppier tracks.
There’s also an answer song (a la “Roxanne, Roxanne”) to Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me,” from a woman’s perspective, by Lady Saw called “Son of a Bitch.”
