Site XML Feed in Blogger and Movable Type

To activate your XML site feed in Blogger (something you want to do), go into your blog’s settings and select Site Feed. Change “Publish Site Feed” to “Yes,” choose “Full Descriptions,” click “Save Settings” and republish.

If you use Movable Type, the default settings have included a site feed for years, so unless you’ve deleted it, you already have one. If you have an old version of Movable Type, you may want to obtain the Atom template and create a new index template.

  1. RSS, the type of XML we use for this, allows publishers to syndicate their content. It presents the data in a way that it can be read by a multitude of applications.iTunes uses XML all over the place, for example. You don’t see it, because it’s all back-end. Two different applications can communicate with each other by using XML. But for blogs, the main reason to support XML is to allow people to subscribe to your content instead of visiting your website. The reader can get the same information, but it is flexible. For example, the reader can customize the way it is displayed, or aggregate all the blogs together. It’s another format of storing the data, and it’s really easy to implement. If you don’t implement it, you’re possibly cutting your content off from people who may enjoy reading it.Most news sites offer their stories in XML. You can subscribe to XML feeds from Amazon for new products and such.M-D, your blog already has an XML feed, so you don’t have to worry about it, unless you want to keep up with the times and upgrade your feed to the “Atom” version.
