Happy Summer and Need Techie Suggestion

The season changed today, and in celebration I named the new featured theme on the Mix CD Exchange. I wish I had more time so I could concentrate on improving that site.

Speaking of time, this is going to be an activity-filled summer. I’m looking forward to it.

The organization for which I am on the board of directors is looking to upgrade their overloaded website to a colocated server. The machine (rack-mounting server) they’re looking for should include dual Intel Xeon 3.2 MHz processors, 4 GB RAM, and at least 250 GB of usable hard drive space. I checked Dell. Their price seemed okay ($4,000) but I’m a little wary of Dell due to their horrible customer service stories. Anyone have any other suggestions?

  1. 1. I’ve run four companies entirely on Dell servers and never had one customer service problem, and only one hardware issue in seven + years.

    2. You’re not looking to Dell to *be* your co-lo facility are you? You can find dozens that are way less expensive than Dell. You’re in NY, right? There must be hundreds of co-lo places up there where you could house a Dell box.

Let me know if you want any info …

  2. Good to know you’ve had good experiences with Dell. And I was only looking at them for the server… shopping separately for colocation facilities. The org is based out of Texas, so we may opt for something down there, but I wouldn’t want to limit the search.

    Thanks for the info, dvg!

  3. FYI: I have about thirty Windows 2003 boxes, five Windows 2000 boxes, and eight Apache boxes running right now, all on Dell. So you’re safe with them as long as you aren’t going Mac. :0)
