At Home

I have something like 15 vacation days left for the year. There’s no way I can use all of them, but I’m going to try… starting tomorrow. I have some things to take care of.

Speaking of taking care of things, I need to have my wisdom teeth removed. I’ve been good about going to the dentist. Since college, I’ve gone once every six months. My teeth are in great condition. But my third molars are coming in a little bit and the bottom ones are slightly impacted. It hasn’t been hurting, but once in a while, I’m just aware of the corner of the teeth peeking through the gums.

So I have to have them extracted at some point, and I’m not looking forward to it. If anyone has any good extraction stories to share, I could use the encouragement. Most of the time all I hear about is pain, discomfort, and blood.

  1. Granted, my teeth weren’t impacted, but my wisdom teeth removal was a simple as could be. It was so quick that they had my teeth out before the drugs really even kicked in, and it didn’t hurt or anything. I went home and went to sleep, and by the next day I pretty much felt fine.

  2. Well, since I’m more highly evolved than your typical human, I only had two wisdom teeth. Basically, I went to sleep, woke up, and they were gone. The painkillers kept me so woozy for the next day or so that I didn’t notice much of anything. And I got to eat lots of ice cream. And people brought me stuff. So that’s good.

  3. I am not so evolved. All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted and required surgery to remove them. The worst pain I had was when they put the IV in to give me the happy-sleepy-goofy drugs. I only took one of the 30 gigantic, narcotic painkillers they prescribed and that was whileI was still groggy from the IV drugs. I never had any pain, and don’t think I even needed the one pill I took.

And any swelling I had was gone by the time I slept off the IV drugs.

The surgery was on Dec. 22. I ate full Christmas dinner with my family. (Granted I skipped anything with nuts becasue I still had little tooth sized holes in my gums.)

P.S. – Do not try to store things in those little holes. But do use them to gross out any squeamish family members or friends. 🙂

  5. After reading Becca’s comment, I feel a little bit better. Only having THREE wisdom teeth, I always wondered…well, I can’t really finish this sentence without opening myself up to ridicule, so…fill in the blank yourself.

  6. all 4 of mine were impacted too. i felt kinda blah because of the drugs, but that’s cuz i’m weird and drugs don’t make me feel good. i got a little swollen, but no biggie i don’t think. some recommendations: get it over and done with sooner rather than later – if the roots take hold it’ll be less ok; definitely gargle with salt water like they tell you to – it makes any swelling go away and you feel much better. 🙂

  7. I had no issues when I had mine removed. And that really as good as it can be.

The ex on the otherhand — well, won’t go into that. Altho my oldest is having oral surgery next week (one tooth is growing in crooked, so they are going to expose and wire it so it will grow correctly). So I may have another good story next week for you.

  8. I had 3 removed and everything went perfectly fine. I was eating pizza the next night. I did discover that I’m allergic to nitrous oxide, so I puked when I got home. But that was the only negative about the experience.
