Feeling Like Dixie Chicks

Johnny Depp made some critical remarks about the United States in a German magazine called Stern. Stern is apparently a weekly news and current affairs magazine, kind of like Entertainment Weekly with nudity. Unfortunately, I can’t actually check out the magazine from work, so I’ll have to find the article later and post a translation.

I expect there to be some mild backlash in the media, people calling to boycott his movies, etc. For my own part, I’d probably be happier staying in the south of France, too.

  1. I don’t know about that. Johnny Depp isn’t as populist as the Dixie Chicks, and thus, I don’t think the backlash will be nearly as severe. Heck, in this instance, it’s easy enough for his publicist to play the remarks off as “misinterpreted” or just plain out of context. In the incident with Natalie Maines, she said what she said in front of a London concert audience, with all sorts of press present.Besides, Johnny Depp is practically an ex-pat anyway.

  2. If I refused to see any movie that had an actor in it whom I found dislikable on a personal level, I wouldn’t be able to see any movies at all! haha.
I love James Woods’ and Charlton Heston’s movies… but their politics I could never ever agree with. I love a lot of Natalie Merchant’s music, but an old friend of mine was at a party of hers, and the way he described her, I do NOT think I could ever be good chums with her. haha. She doesn’t sound like someone with a personality I could get along with.
Madonna has been ridiculed by many all these years for various and regular “inappropriate behaviour”, yet she’s a pop star with staying power.
I love Vincent Van Gogh’s art work despite that he was mentally ill and did some pretty wacked out stuff. Other notable artists have been wife beaters & killers!
I have a serious aversion to John Wayne Gacy’s art work… I mean, I think it’s ugly & the subject matter I find offensive. Yet the paintings sell for quite a chunk of change.
So I think it’s illogical to assume that any celebrity, like James Woods or Johnny Depp, who unabashedly speak their mind about their feelings on current issues are going to ruin their careers. And I think it’s ridiculous & petty to think it should ruin their careers.
As actors go, I’m not a big fan of Johnny Depp, but I love James Woods’ movies. On a personal level, James Woods would make my blood boil, but I wouldn’t mind being Johnny Depp’s neighbor. heh.
If you don’t like what James Woods or Johnny Depp has to say about the state of the world… fine. But if people call them dispicable (or other tantamount terms) for expressing an opinion, no matter how rude, that IS oversensativity! It’s just petty.
America is about FREEDOM. If someone doesn’t know that by now, they’ve not been paying attention to the President’s speeches. heh-heh. So if someone’s against free speech – I think that could make you “unAmerican”, no? 😉

  3. Good argument, Chloe. I just don’t think that the majority of people in the country “get it” like you do. If they did, the Dixie Chicks wouldn’t have been blacklisted on some radio stations by ClearChannel and more people would be upset and asking for impeachment in regards to Bush’s lies rather than Clinton’s lies.

  4. I don’t think it’s so much that I “get it” and some people don’t. I just think a lot of people are incredibly petty. haha.
To be honest, I never listened to the Dixie Chicks. I wouldn’t even know a song of theirs if I heard it.
But here’s the thing, now that I’ve thought about it – I think it’s not quite parallel to compare the Dixie Chicks with Johnny Depp. The Dixie Chicks are country music, no? I would think that they would’ve had more “fans” in the conservative political leanings than Johnny Depp anyway. I mean, considering the movies he chooses anyway. Like Chocolat, for example. That’s hardly a movie to appeal to right-wingers. haha. I think that’s the sick part of the blacklisting or whatever. People felt betrayed because THEIR (property) musicians disagreed (committed treason).
I think the conservatives hated Johnny Depp all along. So I think it’s stupid for anyone to assert his career will be hurt by this.
Besides, I don’t think his career has been about popular appeal in about 15 years anyway. haha.
As for Bush or Clinton or politics and whatnot… All I could ever really think about is how Bush says he’s determined to spread democracy around the world or whatever… But I think if we had a world wide democracy, including everyone in the world, the right wing would be hugely outnumbered. I don’t see how conservatives could want the world to live in a democracy… it would mean their end, surely.

  5. I’m with Chloe. The Dixie Chicks weren’t boycotted by everyone, just their rural, country fans. Who are by and large conservative politically. Johnny Depp’s proclamation is barely a blip.

  6. I’m not saying I expected politicians to rename 21 Jumpstreet as 21 Freedom Street or anything, I just figured there would be some conservative radio or TV talking head sending some comments his way, but it seems no one really cares but me. :>
