I’m exploring the feasibility of maintaining my current job and working part-time with a school concurrently. I would have to move this fall, in order to be closer to both the school and my day job. My rent could go up anywhere from $2,400 to $9,600 a year. I would need a car and insurance to go with it. I could get a car around $7,000 and the insurance would cost me $3,500 a year (at least). Therefore, if I were to get a part time teaching job, it would have to pay at least $13,000 to cover the minimal costs.
I still think the best idea is to aim for a full-time teaching position. While the salary isn’t great, and benefits aren’t great, eventually I’ll get my licensure for administration.
You’re welcome to post (intelligent) comments, as long as you don’t exude the attitude of “I have all the answers.” :>
I agree with your assessment that you should probably just aim for a full time teaching job. It seems like it would be very difficult to find a part time teaching job that would pay what you need it to and allow you the flexibility to work that and your full-time day job. And while you’re right that you would probably take a (hopefully) temporary pay-cut, it’s probably worth it to do something that you really enjoy. It’s definitely good that you’ve weighed the pros and cons of it, anyway.
Not that I have any answers. 🙂
No answers here, either. 🙂 But I’m thinking about the fact that your rent could go up $800/month and thinking… either you’re paying peanuts now, or that must be SOME neighborhood you’d be moving into!
Like Darren said, it’s good that you’re thinking about it from all angles.
I am paying peanuts now. $365/month. It’s cheap because I split a bedroom in a three bedroom-apartment. If I were to get my own place, I’d have to pay upwards of $1,100/month. If I were to share an apartment, I might pay $500-$700 a month.
Aaaaaah. Yes, that all makes sense then. I have my own (tiny) place and I pay $1075. It’s tough on the finances, but I admit it’s worth it to me to have my own space… even when my friends-with-roommates are planning a Europe trip this spring which I can’t afford. Le sigh.
