Work Update

Here’s an update on my previous comment. Our organization is apprently in the worst financial state it’s ever been. My department has to find a way to make $100,000 more than what is currently projected. This is going to happen in the form of a lot of un-paid overtime.

From what I can tell, a certain co-worker is under the impression that I don’t do anything and my presence within the company has not helped the organization. I know the organization would be lost without me, and though it’s often very tempting to leave, I don’t because I like what we do, and I believe in what we do. The problem is that certain person(s) make it nearly impossible for me to enjoy doing what we do when these certain person(s) are around. It hurts because this job is something I work hard to do well, and my “manager” creates her own view of the way things are.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go to sleep soon so I can be in the office by 7:00 am tomorrow morning.

  1. It’s just wrong when I wake up at 5:15 am to the sound of someone in the shower….

Seriously, though, working as hard as you do and as many hours as you do for an organization that doesn’t appreciate the work that you do…that doesn’t make sense. The other thing is, and I don’t mean to slight you in any way, NO ONE in almost any organization is irreplacable. The company would not, unfortunately, be “lost” without you. They survived before you showed up, and they’d survive afterwards. They would probably have to scramble for a bit after you left to cover the jobs you did, but they’d survive. You need to do what’s best for you. If that TRULY means staying there, that’s fine, but I think you need to seriously evaluate whether or not that is really the best thing for you. And if it is, then you need to talk to your superiors and attempt to remedy some of the problems.

  2. Take it to George. He can be an ass, but I’m sure he knows how valuable you are to the organization. Tell him you’ve been getting the impression from D that she thinks you don’t do anything, and tell him that you’ve been really committed to the organization for a number of years and have put extraordinary amounts of time into it, and you’re concerned about D’s comments about you being unproductive and you want to make sure that George doesn’t feel the same way. I mean….if George DOES feel the same way, then something needs to happen. Either you need to figure it out and start giving them what they want, or you need to get out because you can’t give them what they want and they don’t appreciate what you are giving them. OR, on the other hand, and this is more likely, he’ll tell you that he does appreciate what you do and then it doesn’t matter what D thinks because her opinion doesn’t mean anything next to George’s.

  3. The thing is, Alissa, that even if George says, “Yes, we do appreciate you and you have nothing to worry about” that doesn’t really solve the problem, because this co-worker will still be making life miserable for Spike. Because it’s un-likely that George will do much about the other person. There could possibly be a reprimand, but that would probably only make the person more bitter. It’s a tough situation to be in.

  4. Darren- I think you just like to argue with me. My point was that if Spike hears from George that he’s doing a good job, it will probably be much easier to tune out D and to not question his worth to the organization.

  5. I do like arguing with you, that’s true. And you’re right. All I’m saying is that I’ve been in that situation, although the person I had problems with was my boss and his wife (who was his assistant), and when I tried to bring it to HIS boss’s attention it ended up badly for me and did not change the situation at all. And although the big boss assured me I was doing a good job and everything was fine, it didn’t make my work situation any better and ultimately I ended up having to leave the company. That’s all I’m saying. No, he won’t question his worth, but it might not make working there any easier.
